Meet Tom, one of our brilliant Software Engineers here at Naimuri! 🛠️
Tom’s path to tech wasn’t exactly linear. It started when a friend showed him some slick visuals and indie games built using Processing and JavaScript.
We sat down with Tom to ask him what life is like on the front lines of our engineering team....
How did you get into this career path?
Headline would read: “History graduate come British gas call centre employee inspired to code by arty friend”
An unlikely read, but essentially, I had a friend who built slick visuals, and adorable indie games, using the likes of Processing and JavaScript, and I was like- "Woah maaaaaan". This inspired me to take out a personal development loan and re-admit myself to uni.
I've been writing flawless code ever since.
What's the non-negotiable morning ritual you absolutely need before tackling your Naimuri work commences - (coffee, dog walk, doom scrolling)?
It is currently some combination of immediate sunlight, yoga, walk, run or meditation. Full disclosure; it's improved dramatically over time. This is swiftly followed by 4 monster energy drinks and the occasional blood sacrifice.
If your workday was a soundtrack, what's the first song on the playlist, and what mood does it put you in for getting things done?
AM to PM, by Christina Milian. Like meditation, it keeps me grounded and focused.
What is life like in your day-to-day role at Naimuri? Tell us a little about your work, colleague interactions and anything else you're involved in?
Mainly; the end-to-end delivery of software. This includes breaking down requirements into tasks, implementing solutions and then completing the software lifecycle with e2e tests and deployment. It is a varied and satisfying role.
As for colleague interactions, we're light on team rituals, but love ad-hoc pairing, and when in the office, we’re a chatty bunch and shout loudly from our desks.
Important to note, I work with many Liverpudlians so whilst the language barrier is really tough, it’s great to have such a diverse team.
Beyond that, I help with mentoring and always aim for a lunchtime walk.
What or who inspires you?
It would have to be Pitbull, I quote - "This biggity boy's a diggity dog". This particular passage motivates me, even in my lowest moments.
What is the biggest challenge you find in your role/industry?
Accepting help, channelling frustration into action, intellectual humility, and maintaining attention to detail across disparate tasks. Personally, I've plenty to learn in all these areas but have fortunately worked and continue to work with individuals that set a very good example.
How has the industry changed since you joined?
I've coded with those old enough to remember punch cards, so relatively, not that much? AI has certainly changed the way I learn though, making me more resourceful. Also, the constant adding of tooling in the form of npm packages and the like has filled in more generalised problems which overall has made coding more enjoyable.
Why did you want to work for Naimuri?
I've paid attention to politics for many years and loved the idea of working, in some way, for public good. When looking for jobs I wanted buy-in into the vision and purpose of the company and Naimuri ticked all the boxes. It has certainly delivered and I continue to be impressed by the work done here, both on my project and across the company.
